Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius)
Ninebark is the workhorse of native shrubs — nearly indestructible and beautiful in every season. In late spring, button-like clusters of white flowers hum with native bees and other pollinators, followed by reddish seed capsules that feed birds. Its signature exfoliating bark peels in cinnamon-brown layers for winter interest, which gives the shrub its name. Growing 5–8 feet tall with gracefully arching branches, it handles drought, clay soil, and neglect once established, making it perfect for hedges, foundation plantings, slopes, and pollinator gardens. Plant in full sun to part shade. Sold in a #5 (5-gallon) container.
