Winterberry (Ilex verticillata)

Nothing lights up a winter landscape like Winterberry. This native deciduous holly drops its leaves in fall to reveal branches packed with brilliant scarlet berries that persist for months — spectacular against snow, beloved by robins, cedar waxwings, and bluebirds, and perfect for holiday cutting. Growing 6–10 feet tall, Winterberry thrives in average garden soil and excels in wet spots and rain gardens where other shrubs struggle. Plant in full sun to part shade. Note: winterberries are dioecious — female plants produce the berries and need a male plant nearby for pollination, so plan for at least one male per grouping. Sold in a #5 (5-gallon) container.
