Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)
The Bur Oak is the iconic tree of the Illinois prairie savanna — massive, majestic, and built to last centuries. Deeply furrowed, corky bark makes it remarkably tolerant of drought and harsh conditions, and like all native oaks it's a wildlife powerhouse, hosting hundreds of caterpillar species that sustain nesting songbirds. Its large, fringed acorns are prized by birds and mammals. Maturing to 70–80 feet with a broad, spreading crown, a Bur Oak is a legacy tree — the shade you plant today for generations to come. Extremely adaptable to clay, alkaline, and dry soils. Plant in full sun with room to grow. Sold in a #5 (5-gallon) container.
