Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus)
Looking for a tough, stately shade tree that shrugs off city conditions? The Kentucky Coffeetree is one of the best native trees for urban yards and parkways — tolerant of drought, pollution, road salt, and poor soils. Its enormous, lacy compound leaves cast light, dappled shade that lets grass grow beneath, and its bold, sculptural branch structure adds striking winter interest. Maturing to 60–75 feet, this long-lived Illinois native is an excellent, disease-resistant alternative to overplanted species like maple and honeylocust. Early settlers roasted its seeds as a coffee substitute, giving the tree its name. Plant in full sun. Sold in a #5 (5-gallon) container.
