OLINYJK YARD
816 N. Hamlin
The Olinyk yard, on an unusual triangle lot, is a sight to behold. 20 years ago it took Mike over an hour to mow the grass in his yard. Now you are hard pressed to find the grass among the wildflowers, vegetables and fruit trees. No synthetic chemicals are used in the garden. Compost made from home food scraps and coffee grounds from work along with a layer of fall leaves provide nutrients to the garden. You will see a rain barrel that is used to water the 375 square foot vegetable garden which contains a wide variety of tomatoes, beans, assorted greens, herbs, beets, carrots, garlic, onions, gourds, pumpkins, raspberries, blackberries and pears.
Mike follows permaculture methods to minimize topsoil disturbance. His compost cooks in the “Death Star” in the yard. He also integrates his Helpful Harvest Hounds into his gardening operation!
