GRAU YARD

Picture
159 Michael John Dr

Cindy and Scott moved into their home in the summer of 2019. They loved the large yard but its main features were grass, standing water and buckthorn. They worked with their dear friend Carol Becker to put in a border bed around the whole back yard of native bushes and plants. A small pond was added a couple of years ago. Major flooding from new construction caused a redo of one corner of the yard. So a 500 gallon tank was installed last fall to remove water from above ground to infiltrate into the ground. Rain gardens surround the drainage area. One of the few trees was taken down last fall as well and a new carving graces the yard.

The front and sides of the house also have native plantings including prickly pear cactus that blooms! Birdbaths and small water containers are found throughout the yard for wildlife. The Graus also host a community tote for Collective Resource Compost Co-op for their neighbors to remove food scraps from the waste stream. Vegetable gardening was moved to the Community Garden this year except for a few herbs.

Cindy loves the wildlife that is attracted to the yard. Many plants attract hummingbirds. Also by leaving leaves in the fall there are always birds picking through the litter for bugs. The garden is always a work in progress.
