BARTUCCI YARD

530 N Ashland Ave
Feel free to use the permeable driveway off Sibley for BIKE parking.
Marcello and Amy Bartucci moved into this residence in the summer of 2011. Many folks may remember 2011 as a very hot and wet year. Storms, power outages and flooding did not make things easy during the move, but the couple was determined to get started immediately on many home improvement projects (inside and out). To this day, it is certified by the Conservation Foundation’s Conservation@Home recognition program.
One of the first main outdoor priority projects was to transition to natural lawn care. The property is a corner and has a large turf footprint on two lots so this was no small feat. A natural plan promoting life in the soil and biodiversity above ground was implemented and has “grown” on the community ever since. Amy eventually became an advocate for pesticide reduction on residential, park and school properties in Park Ridge and this property is often used as an example of good soil health management practices.
A few years later, six custom-built raised vegetable garden beds made their debut in order to grow organic produce and cultivate perennial herbs. The property has large shade trees which help provide the family with a very pleasant experience to gather and dine on the patio.
The most sustainable components on this property are a backyard composting model, two rain barrels, native plants and even a clothes line for air drying the family’s laundry. On this tour, you’ll spot lemon verbena, golden alexander, phlox, joe pye, yarrow, penstemon, button bush and more.
